2025 Season

Captain Damien is off and running after cracking a drive through the bitter east wind of Seapoint to warm applause on Saturday 7th February. It was so good the video is available for a small fee. A turnout of 49 golfers braved the conditions to watch his thunderous whack. He silenced all doubters and left Gerrard Denning speechless – some feat. President Paul did his best. Brían Clarke expressed a sigh of relief after turning the clock back with a fine drive. A wonderful welcome filled with warmth and joy exploded when Wee Nev struck a hammer blow down the right half of the fairway – truly remarkable Young Man. The scoring belied the conditions which paid a huge compliment to the presentation of the course. Two’s were scarce with only Gary O’Reilly and Paddy Wall finding the elusive birdie on the 2nd for a healthy profit.

The winner and first time visitor to the podium was recent recruit Joe Fitzgerald with an excellent 42pts. Lovely to see new blood pumping racing through the ranks and providing hope for all newbies.  On 41 points Philip Sheridan secured Category 1 and served his intentions of being a serious contender every outing. Category 2 fell to Captain Damien who freewheeled his way to a bright 38pts with a number of scratches to boot. James Cooney also defied the conditions to claim Category 3 on a super 40 points. Despite his “negativity” Patrick Maguire won Category 4 with a calm 39pts which included too many putts for his liking. The Senior category was won with 37pts by Sheamie who was in disbelief after the round – miracles exist.

A witty presentation followed with President Paul ensuring all winners were appropriately dressed for photos and he accredited Patrick Maguire with the best dressed accolade. A monster day out Patrick!

Roll on March 15th and here we come Tulfarris.

Caught Napping – the snooze is over – much to do – stay awake

Our society mourns the death of our first President and wonderful member

Larry Farrell. His reign from 1999 to 2001 was well documented

through his camera, oodles of photographs and many tales from his

sea going adventures.

We extend our deepest sympathies to all family members

especially brother and fellow society member Paddy.

“So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. …”

HONOURED

Saturday 16th July 2022 is already archival and safely stored in the memory banks. God blessed us with brilliant weather, Mannan Castle served up an immaculate course, member turned out in unprecedented numbers and the tasty burger completed the À La Carte menu. All for a true gentleman of the society ‘Wee Jimmy’.

He held a special place in members’ hearts and in the history of the society. He earned it through his commitment, dedication and passion for our golf outings and weekends away. His attendance was impeccable and he simply loved it. Nearly 100 golfers played in this celebration – a record in itself- and the welcome from Mannan Castle showed the respect they also had for their former member. A fitting and glowing tribute to our esteemed and honoured 2013 Captain.

I sensed he was smiling down at us all as the buzz of the large presentation  increased the longer the night went on. To bring Niall Smith to the golf course, to have Ray Clarke and Michael Farrell return to golf and Jimmy McArdle sing ‘The Gallant John Joe’ all conspired to show his continuing strong influence.

The moment of the night was when his great friend and buddy Noel McCormack presented the ‘Wee Jimmy Trophy’ to the society from the Carolan family. A truly beautiful piece that honours his deep service to Shamrocks Golf Society.

Noel presents the ‘Wee Jimmy Trophy’ to Captain Sean and President Gerry

Farewell Wee Jimmy – until we meet again

1/1/1967 – 9/9/2021

A surreal dawning of our new reality hit society members on Tuesday evening when the sad news of Wee Jimmy’s untimely death started to break. Its speed and finality left members numb and immediately thinking of our own fragility and vulnerability. The loss of his presence and positivity is unimaginable. His fiercely competitive and determined side on the course will be missed as well as his thoughtful and insightful knowledge of the game. His gentle disposition and pleasant company will be stored in our memory bank until our inevitable reunion occurs. Enjoy your new heavenly home Jimmy.

“Character”

The character of our President Jim McArdle brimming with charisma, appeal and charm allied to his hale and hearty personality was resoundingly endorsed by 64 players turning out to honour him at the Slieve Russell on Saturday last. He has elaborate plans to present his prize in mid -summer and get ready for an extravaganza with Shantully Inn, The Tank or a secret shebeen as possible locations. I am informed he is as sweet as a lark with his constant practice of ‘Bright Blue Rose” much to the amusement of family.

The character shown by Gerard Denning to shoot 43 pts is also remarkable. Under the expert eye of son Conor he has rebuilt his swing and restored his accuracy around the greens. He blew away the doldrums and a very strong competitive field to come home a very popular winner. Straight down the middle, deft chipping and brilliant putting were the ingredients to his wonderful score. Luckily, the presence of Padraig Gorman in his group prevented premature outdoor dining taking place on the tenth. I heard on good authority that if he was offered something better than a ‘medium sherry’ he might have succumbed. I like the sociability being offered all the same.

Words cannot do justice to Rhys Clarke’s amazing score of 42pts playing off 9. Andy, he is pursuing the number 1 position in the society and intends to claim it shortly despite Conor, Kyle and Gerry’s best intentions. Rhys, Saturday’s display is about John McFadden’s raw talent and character building for the road ahead. Mighty achievement and be extremely proud of the score.

The gross score was won by Andy Coleman with a fine 29pts but he knows the challengers are fast catching up on him. The quiet man of the society Darren O’Reilly claimed 3rd place with a fine 36 pts and his recent practice round in Virginia certainly paid dividends. Mark Argue took 4th place with 35pts and this wily character is looking forward to his joust with Vincent Cooney in the matchplay. Early bird James Cooney collected the high handicap prize with 30pts and his appetite for the game is proving rewarding.

Sean McEvoy’s fast start can be explained by one word hunger but he ran on empty over the back nine. He was disappointed that his playing partners could offer no assistance to his lack of a breakfast as brother Raphael was still asleep when he called for the grub. Before heading to Sligo he made his way to McDonalds and chipped out on his 2’s money. Joe Gavin simply quoted ‘Feck Duffy’ for dragging his game down on the front nine after a cracking back nine of 21 pts. Is this man destined for a Major this year?  However, he may have to make a big decision and get a divorce from his character John. Our visitors prize went to former course member Pat Walsh with 33pts.

I will now refer to our legendary character John McFadden who has decided to make his golf pay by focussing solely on the par threes. He was disappointed that he only birdied two of them but his free golf on the day brought a broad smile to him. Fintan Cahill has a similar outlook as a supplement to recent sales while Rhys Clarke bought ice cream with his winnings under the watchful eye of Bomber.

Now to our last character affectionately known as “Wee Nev”. Matchplay Champion 2020 is sweet music to his ears and his stride to the first tee on Saturday reflected his ínner belief and satisfaction. His win was a major breakthrough in this competition and he always had his heart set on getting his name on the trophy. We await his victory speech but the spirit of the game was also a winner thanks to his gracious opponent Jeffrey – who is a champion in waiting.  As we get ready for the challenge of Nuremore on July 3rd please  get all first round matches played as our truncated season is putting pressure on play by dates.

A sincere and genuine thank you to the following characters who ran the day from start to finish and made President Jim’s day a special occasion John, Brían, Jim and Gerard. Well done lads!

Let’s leave on this note  “Stay well, FRIEND!”

“Good to be back, so good to be back”

Donning the emblazon red jumper and T- shirt made getting dressed on Saturday morning extra special. Childhood memories of heading to the seaside flooded back but this time it was to walk the links of Arklow among friends.  A wonderful feeling that placed the prospects of one overs or worse way down the line. How many would love to stand on the first tee and swing into the blue sky oblivious to everyday cares and worries.

But there is always one who was more serious about his golf than the rest.

Hats off to Paddy Byrne who stole the show with an excellent 34pts on a course that called for accuracy and a deft touch around wonderfully contoured greens. No doubt Paddy’s easy relaxed swing and temperament played a big part in his success which was richly deserved.

Padraig Gorman warmed up for his big showdown with Jeffrey later this week with a fine 31pts to stride away with Category 1 spoils. There was a rumour afloat that Jeff was taking a lesson in Headfort in preparation for the battle while Nev is still beaming.

Category 2 was won by Terry Smith with a very good score of 30pts. I believe a previous trip to the course paid handsome dividends and he also went through Trim to get to the links. The wily but super fit Patrick Maguire was an easy winner of category 3. His lockdown training and strict health regime since Christmas has added to his length off the tee and his famed touch around the greens was also very much in evidence.

With the 2nd best score of the day John Duffy coasted to a category 4 win. He easily outplayed his playing partners and was delighted to have taken a few quid of Matthew and Son – a hairy son at that. Thinking of sons it was notable that age and experience outdid the exuberance and arrogance of youth when comparing fathers’ scores to that of their siblings. My evidence for this is based on the thrashing Jim gave to Martin, Gerard gave to Conor and Matthew gave to Fintan. Remarkable stuff Men!

The twos were divided among 6 with Thomas scoring twice with John Columb, Lee Clarke, Paul McEvoy and Paul Sharkey hitting the pot once. Well done boys as the par 3s were excellent holes with the emphasis on skill and precision rather than power.

More good news is that we have only two weeks to wait before the honour of claiming President Jim McArdle’s prize becomes a reality for one of one members. I also wish to flag a change to the fixture card in July when Greenore cannot host us on the Saturday and we are now booked into Nuremore for 10.00am on July 3rd. The hope is that Greenore will be on the 2022 calendar. This will bring back memories to Aidan and Sean who are past members. Looking at this week’s winners the impact of Virginia Golf Club as a nursery of talent came into focus.

In my excitement yesterday morning I even shaved.

UPDATE

Congratulations to Neville Hall who has progressed to the final of the matchplay after a deserved victory over Sheamie in his home patch. A closing par on 18th pushed him into the final against Padraig Gorman or Jeffrey Martin. He is chopping at the bit lads so so please keep the final as your focus before the next outing in over two weeks time. Well done Neville.

———————————–

Before Arklow there is some unfinished business from last year with the semi-final draw of the matchplay now posted. To facilitate the start of the 2021 competition the final needs to be played before our next outing on Saturday 5th June in the Slieve Russell.

More to follow on Saturday’s outing to Arklow later…………stay focussed.

It’s a long way from …………………..

To offset the loss, disappointment, letdown and longing over the postponement of our trip to Carne 46 members instead visited Laytown & Bettystown Golf Links on Friday last. The reward for our good sense and responsibility was a well presented golf course bathed in beautiful sunshine cooled by a gentle breeze.  The tour guide pinpointing the formation of sand dunes and coastal features along the early holes allowed most players to relax and re learn important geography. He even pointed out a ‘Lobster Pot’ to the fishy few who were still yearning.

October is David Rogers’ month of mists and mellow fruitfulness as he again scorched around the links bringing in 40pts.  Another fine exhibition of golf with pars and birdies galore to claim the overall prize. Unlike Rhys his battery was fully charged and in supreme working order. Hot on his heels was Ollie Kierans 39pts which claimed Category 3. His success is down to his virtual golf machine which allowed him to play the course in his sleep after weeks of practice aiming for perfection. Category 1 went to the new favourite for the matchplay after his resounding victory over Cool Hand Joe on 36pts. Fine golf Jeff and you are leaving your adorable twin idols trailing. Great to see new member Eoin McNamara winning Category 2 with 34pts and his Ollie alliance at the weekends is most definitely paying off. Another first time winner captured Category 4 on an excellent 35pts. Obviously, the confidence gained from his new handicap ensured Danny Hanley’s outscored all rivals in this section. Wonderful to see new winners and great scoring in all categories.

A quick glance at the scores would indicate a youthful revolution is occurring but remember gossoons that Farrell, Cooney, Kinnear, McCormack and Eagleton are all resting up at present. The greys have not gone away. The best shot of the day goes to Paddy Sheanon who decided to lengthen the 18th but found the clubhouse too big an obstacle to remove. Thank God no injuries occurred and he recovered to score on the hole. Out of 138 attempts taken at the par 3’s only 1 yielded a glorious two. As a result Jimmy Carolan claimed the €92 booty and made it another profitable day at the office. I can only imagine some of the other 137 attempts when I look at the score cards. On a positive note we are very much aiming for more quality golf on Saturday 24th October if restrictions allow. Fingers crossed. Please stay healthy and keep away from the milling crowd.

Concra Golf Club 4/5 September 2020.

A new record of 65 golfers flexed their muscles on Concra over last weekend in an attempt to win Mr. Gerard Denning’s COVID prize. From a quick glance at many scores a number of prominent members showed no muscle and Captain Gerard has undertaken to post a fitness regime to them before our next start.  A special word of thanks to Gerard for sponsoring the beautiful Waterford Crystal piece that will adorn Kyle McGuinness’ mantelpiece for years to come. Playing off 11 Kyle’s performance was close to exhibition golf on a course playing very tough. His card was a model of consistency despite a a little dip over the closing holes. Heartiest congratulations on a brilliant win and your golf did the talking unlike some of our comic activists on our what’s app group.

Lads, there is a new favourite for the matchplay title after wee Nev’s great showing with 35pts. To cast a first hole blip aside with such confidence shows the mettle of the man. His new driver brings Keats to mind ” A Thing of beauty is a joy forever:……..Full of sweet dreams, and health” and the word is that during the pandemic he is sleeping full time with ” Taylor Sim 650″. A great score as well Nev and a deserving Category 3 prize. Could another Major breakthrough be beckoning with gunpowder replacing “Uachtar reoite”?

Not to be outdone Sean McCabe carded a fine 34pts indicating his switch to Headfort was a wise and successful decision. Another super score off 11 and the cream certainly came to the top in Category 1. Padraig Gorman smiled his way through to collect the Category 2 prize and kept the Virginia flag flying just above half mast. Paul Sharkey collected the Category 4 prize with a determined display no doubt assisted by his birdie on 12th hole. What a worthwhile shot that proved to be netting him a lovely €65. His only regret was the matching of the same score on 14th by the wily Patrick Maguire. Early reports that he smacked his tee shot to 6 feet and calmly sank the putt were dispelled later in the evening to a sublimely executed chip into the cup. All in all he was last seen heading to BOI on Monday morning in the company of his guru, fitness coach and counsellor Peader Clerkin. Money safely lodged!

Great thanks are due to Brían Clarke, Damian Madden and John Clarke for keeping the wheels in motion and carrying out all checks and balances to produce our final result sheet. Marvellous work after a long haul around certain areas of Lough Muckno that have been rarely visited before. The quickest round of golf ever played around Concra has been accredited to John McFadden and it is being investigated by the Guinness Book of Records. Further details to follow on this sensational news. To all members sincere thanks for accommodating our large numbers by playing on Friday. Deeply appreciated.

Best wishes are extended to our  esteemed ex President Eric Davidson for a full and speedy recovery to full health after his recent illness. The fairways are waiting your return with your gear changing driver and the gentleman’s utility club. According to informed newsreels Paul Kelly’s recovery following his knee operation is progressing well and he will be a threat to all comers in 2021. We hope that Kieran Rogers’ damaged fingers heal and mend fully and as quickly as possible. Your energy and enthusiasm are missed already.  On Paddy Sheanon’s advice it has been decided to put the Eircode of golf courses on all future postings. Keep well until we meet again.

Slieve Russell Outing 1/08/2020

Fifty nine members  descended on Slieve Russell full of hope and anticipation despite the threat of summer rain which didn’t disappoint. To an outsider they appeared a motley crew with many in full uniform while a few appeared destined for pantomime or a party. Two respectable gentleman togged out for golf  more like entrants to the Mad Hatters Tea Party than for serious golf. The dark glasses worn by one member capped the occasion but failed to put off his opponents and duly handed over the money. Pride of place on the course went to the young tigers ably led home by Rhys Clarke with a fabulous 38pts. This young man has used the COVID interlude to sharpen and hone his game to capture first prize from an even younger cousin Kyle McGuinness who took Category 1 on the same score. Their performance left many ex- greats like McArdle, Coleman, Farrell and Mackey trailing in their wake. No doubt they have inherited the game’s delicate finesse from their relation and our former father figure the late Tom Clarke . The future is bright for this ever expanding society.

Category 2 was won by Raphael McEvoy who dismissed the party antics of his playing partners to shoot an impressive 37pts. Included in his round was a brace of twos which also helped his bank balance even further. The support from brother Sean was greatly appreciated and in a late night “zoom” he dedicated his victory to impeccable preparation – wining and dining with the Black Horse the night before. Category 3 was claimed with 35pts from the wily but very capable figure hat is Patrick Maguire. His arrival back at the top echelon of golf was broken on Sky Sports news during the FA Cup final much to the delight of his legion of facebook and twitter followers. After keeping the Senior flag flying no wonder the Celebrations are ongoing!!!!!.

Youth again broke through in Category 4 when David Rogers brought in another excellent score of 37pts to continue his rich vein of form. What a six months of golf David has experienced since his astounding 50pts in Mount Juliet last September. There were 8 winners of twos which netted them €15 each which paid for a drink and accompanied chicken wings.

Captain Gerard’s excellent etiquette on the greens especially his silence on the greens was not appreciated by Paddy Farrell after he sank an amazing putt. Our next outing with God’s blessing is in Concra on September 5th when Captain Gerard is planning a COVID version of his prize. His announcement has left many puzzled but knowing our Captain he will unveil his carefully couched plans that have already received approval fromNPHET. The suspense is building as well as the mystery. Please keep the middle of October free as the weekend away cavalcade heads to Belmullet. Further news to follow over the coming days …………..

Our matchplay draw will be posted later today and there is a great sense of excitement in the result of the Hall / Byrne tussle. Was it metal fatigue or darkness that scuppered a result last week and settle the bragging rights. I have reliably heard that the victor will buy the loser an ice cream cone – in fact the whole works – A Big 99.

Finally, “PS I Love You”

“Let me take you by the hand………………..”

Blessed by fine weather and a golf course in pristine conditions a battle royal loomed among 54 golfer for Captain Neville Hall’s Prize. The predictions were for several possible winners but there was only one winner Brian Gorman who blitzed the field with a remarkable 42pts. He finished a full 9 points ahead of the field and dedicated his new found form to his “Guru” Ollie Kierans. He drove it out of sight, hit greens in regulations and putted superbly on beautiful fast greens. In kissing the Claret trophy he paid a wonderful compliment to Neville on his choice of prize. A beautiful piece that all other runners regretted not performing better. Congratulations Brian on a fabulous round of golf.

Jeffrey Martin return to form brought him home in second place to claim a lovely wooden platter. His attendance at a prominent wedding prevented him from making his usual witty speech but in a text to our Captain he thanked him for his goody bag and delicious burger after 9 holes. The cream came to the top in the gross category with Andy Coleman off 2 scored a decisive result with 25pts. Man of the moment Patrick Maguire quietly slipped into 3rd place with 33pts and signed off his round with an amazing judged putt on the last hole. An unusual outburst of celebration and high jinks followed to the dismay of his playing partners. Make no mistake our Patrick was pumped up for it. He reclaimed the “Old Fart Trophy” and headed home bouncing with his wonderfully crafted piece of artwork.

The high handicap section was won with 32pts by the shrewd Darren O’Reilly. If work commitments were not so pressing Darren’s prize haul would be much greater and his handicap lower. An untapped talent! The front nine went to the newly bearded Richard McEvoy on 18pts while Stephen McBreen travelled from Mayo to claim the back nine on 18pts. Our Past Captain’s Prize went to Paddy Byrne with 31pts and present work commitments are limiting his ability to play but the potential is very much bubbling. Nearest the Pin on the 8th hole was won by Brían Clarke who put in a cracking effort to 5′-3″ only to see his putt slip pass and miss the pot of gold in the 2’s. The society was delighted to donate the the ‘loot’ to the Baby Willow fund. Captain Neville lost two more bottles of wine on his par challenge to Jim McArdle and Richard McEvoy. However he got a boost to his Guinness intake when Vincent O’Reilly brought him a pint for three putting at the Royal Curragh in July. Our Captain generously bought him a putting aid to help cure his ills. Vincent was last seen going to the toilet with putter aid in hand and reciting the immortal words “To Putt or Not to Putt”.

A delighted Declan O’Sullivan was presented with the Tom Clarke Cup after his impressive dismissal of his brother in law Martin McArdle in the final. He recalled in his address the role father figure Tom played in establishing the society and in its present growth. He described his victory as bitter sweet over Martin but decried he wants two in a row. He could be difficult to unseat.

After buying a round of drinks for his 32 strong dinner party the over generous Captain Neville then announced his choice to replace him next year. To warm applause and universal acclaim Gerard Denning accepted the honour and with Captain Neville he walked tall as he led his troops to the Square for a celebratory toast.

“Even if we’re just dancing in the dark

Major Triumph!!!

What a week for Irish golf! They say “It is about the back nine on Sunday afternoon” in a Major. This is when the nerves jingle, you get ahead of yourself, the head becomes frazzled but not our man. He stood tall, swung beautiful, showed a deft touch around the greens and holed everything in sight. He was nerveless and fearless and came home a clear winner. A super champion and a just a lovely fellow. We salute our new Major winner, a most friendly popular fellow who enjoys his social life and friends. A man steeped in the GAA but who has put his golf ahead of our national game to achieve greatness. We salute the great and only Patrick Maguire winner of Virginia’s President’s Prize recently. Congratulations Patrick!!!!!

We also offer our sincerest congratulations to  fellow member Lester Kinnear who had a hole in one on the same day at the 7th hole. A real gem of a shot and according to his caddy Eric “He went down the shaft of a nine iron”. Well done Lester!!!

Seamrogaí Abú.

History Makers

Captain Neville Ernest Hall led 31 delighted golfers into the annals of our society’s history when they played the Royal Curragh last Saturday in perfect calm conditions. This Heathland presentation received universal acclaim and members are begging to have it included again next year. The warm friendly welcome from the club and the sense of history around the clubhouse captivated all who played.

The onslaught on Donnelly’s Hollow started on the first with several birdies recorded and some blemishes as well. Star of the show was Ardee native John Duffy who scorched around in 40pts and narrowly claimed the winners prize. John has lost his  maiden tag and will his touch pass on to his buddy Joe in the not too distant future. John is unlikely to lose any weight imminently as Mr. Hartford’s beef is prime cut. Enjoy !

Category 1 was won after ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ by Aidan Farrell with 31pts which could easily have been much better. Great golf by Aidan who is now challenging young Coleman as the lowest golfer within our group. I must thank our impeccable and beyond reproach tally men BríanClarke and Martin McArdle who smiled through a social media outburst earlier in the evening.  Job well done and Thank You Lads!

Category 2 was easily claimed by Tom Clarke with 37pts and his return to the society and form is most welcome. Vincent Cooney showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals in winning Category 3 with 39pts. He was also richer after receiving his usual donation from Captain Nev. With a great score of 39pts Stuart Skelly easily mopped up the Category 4 prize and his voucher is with father in law and travel companion Billy. Enjoy The Eagles Billy – we can all see you strutting your stuff to “One of the these Nights’, ‘Peaceful Easy Feeling’ or  ‘Witchy Woman’.

Richer for two fine birdies on the 16th were our two top marksmen Brían Clarke and Martin McArdle. They both collected €3o each and had it safely lodged by midnight. Seamus Sheridan took a bottle of wine from Captain Neville on the 11th while the first reversal of the year took place on the 4th hole. The golfer in question is seeking a VOR ruling and the Chief Stipendiary Steward is again looking into the matter. As I sign off the wireless is playing “And straight I will repair to the Curragh of Kildare
For it’s there I’ll find tidings of my dear”

                                                                  President Jim McArdle’s Day

Wow!

Simply a wonderful day that ran into Sunday for many and the adrenalin rush certainly carried onto Clones. What a turnout for our ever popular President with 55 golfers all battling for the prize. The clear winner with a brilliant score of 40pts was Gavin Mackey playing off 10. A marvellous score on a terrific golf course in tricky conditions. What score will Gavin do next time out with his lovely new ‘Buddy’? Obviously, this great score reflects Gavin’s inner peace and contentment with life that he is fully engaged with

Top Man! Stunning Winner

Second place was won by Kieran Byrne with a very fine score of 37pts built on a great back nine 0f 22pts. A fine golfing talent who is delighted to take on close friend Ollie in the matchplay which will be refereed by Calvin. A new name was engraved on the Gross category with Micheal Clarke taking the honour after a superb start with 5 straight pars. An excellent performance and he also matched President Jim on the podium.

The winner of 3rd prize was Niall Kelly with 34pts and he represented the whole household with distinction. Lovely to see a tanned Paul at the presentation and joining in the ‘Craic’. The high handicap section was won by Stuart Skelly also with 34pts and he outshone his father in law Billy yet again.

20pts was the score required to claim the first nine and this prize went to Patrick Maguire. He was last seen filling clay and commencing the green revolution. The back nine was claimed by President Jim on 19pts and once he dispatched his early morning nerves he settled into a scoring rhythm. Snowy reported seeing Dolores  planting early Monday morning – Jim says Dolores has green fingers.

Nearest the pin on the 11th went to one of our younger members Paddy Farrell who cracked a 6 iron close to the pin only for his putt to lip out. Michael Kearney took the same prize on the 16th but his putt just slipped by. The visitor’s prize stayed in house with Niall Lynch beating a few strong golfers with 32pts.

Captain Neville dispatched two bottles of wine to Patrick Maguire for his birdie on the 4th and nearest the pin. This also gave Patrick a share of the twos money as well. Darren O’Reilly took another wine from Neville on the 7th hole. Other winners of the twos were John Columb, Kieran Byrne, Gavin Mackey, Seamus Sheridan and Sean McCabe. The presentation appropriately finished with Jim singing ‘The Gallant John Joe’ and the tone was set to tame the ‘Boys from Armagh.’

Cream comes to the top!

The popularity of Concra was again emphasised with 52 golfers taking up the challenge on Saturday last. The cream certainly came to the top when prize winners were allocated. A superb 40pts by Aidan Farrell off 7 proved decisive and he was a clear winner from Kieran Rogers on 37pts. To keep his card together over the closing tough holes was most impressive and shows his mental toughness. Simply, a super round of golf.  Well done Aidan!

Kieran Rogers’ score was testimony of his courage and doggedness. An injured shoulder, the loss of a contact lens and wounded pride failed to dampen his fire as he compiled an excellent 37pts to take Category 3. Category 1 was won by Andy Coleman with a great round of golf and 34pts off 2. Very hard to keep a good man down. Category 2 was won by another fine score of 34pts by Gavin Mackey. The buggymen certainly spent their money well as they played together and obviously brought the best out of each other. The fourth man in the group seems to have gone AWOL. Any sightings of Ciaran Flanagan would be appreciated. Michael Farrell with 35pts took home Category 4 and he really enjoyed his return to the winning enclosure after a long absence. He probably will entertain his buddies ‘Seans’ to a complimentary round over the coming weeks.

Captain Nev’s wine on the Par 3 9th was claimed by Jimmy Carolan while Sean McCabe took home the back nine bottle on the 12th by a single inch. Luckily for our Captain he missed the putt. The twos were spilt between Sean O’Sullivan, Pat Clarke and Philip Sheridan which gave them practically free golf. The matchplay draw tossed up some interesting pairings with home advantage probably shading it for many. The hardest game to predict is the top match between the doubtful starters Sheanon and Cooney but with the scalp of Flanagan in his pocket Paddy is slight favourite but Vinnie is no quitter.

The last pleasant memory of the day belongs to 14 year old Noah O’Sullivan who belied his tender years to shoot a fantastic 38pts. A rising star!

Maiden winner trumps huge field in Luttrellstown Castle.

The threatened win and maiden tag was discarded in fine style by Pat Clarke as he outscored 46 golfers in the beautiful setting of Luttrellstown Castle. Superb sunshine and a quality golf course earned rave reviews from all who played but none more so than our winner. His great back nine secured his first overall victory on a very impressive 35pts. In his speech he dedicated the victory to his teacher, coach and father in law Vincent and also threw down the gauntlet to him by stating that ‘he will be lower than Vincent within 2 years.’ Category 1 was grabbed by David Rooney with an excellent 33pts and he took money out of Andy’s pocket while accumulating his score – Cheeky boyo! Brían Clarke showed his early morning sojourn to Kells before the ‘bird call’ are paying off with 31pts to win Category 2. Brían along with Damian Madden, Gavin Mackey and John Clarke did trojan work after their golf to check cards, update handicaps and prepare for the matchplay draw. Wonderful work lads!!!!

Category 3 was also won with 33pts by Joe Gavin who showed all his practice in Virginia’s Spring League was not wasted. Well done Joe! Aidan Liggan with another 33pts clicked again to bring the Category 4 prize home with him. Jeffrey got nearest the pin on the 6th to cost the Captain another bottle of wine while James Cooney woke up on the 13th to capture his bottle of Nev’s wine. Three cheers for Captain Neville and his generosity.

The matchplay draw drew up some intriguing matches none better than the clash between Niall Kelly and Martin McArdle. Will President Jim and Father Paul caddy for their sons in this gigantic tussle and who will exercise most influence? Resident bookmaker Nixy chalked up Brían Clarke as early favourite closely followed by Ollie Kierans, Jeffrey Martin and dark horse Noel McCormack. While Neville was praying to the Pharaohs for the good weather we were soaking up his Deputy Vincent filled in with aplomb. At the Concra outing expect fireworks from our returning Captain on and off the course.

There was a late night rumour circulating around Nixy’s that Gavin was so bowled over by Posh and Becks wedding venue that he returned to base camp to negotiate a possible change of venue. We await ………………………white smoke.

Get ready for Concra on Saturday May 11th and make sure all matches in matchplay are played before that date. Get cracking on it lads!!!!!!!!

New Forest proves difficult test…….

With the weight of office lifted from his shoulders Vincent Barry returned to the winners podium with 34pts. This welcome return to form by Vincent was no doubt spurred on from the fantastic golf of his playing partner and visitor Conor McEvoy. He shot an outstanding 39pts off 6 which was amazing golf from this modest student. Well done Conor!

Eamonn McDonnell who was beaten on the back nine for the overall won Category 3 and also 2 bottles of wine for his birdie on hole 2 courtesy of our Captain Neville. Michael Clarke proved the winner of category 1 with 32 pts and he also got inspiration from his nephew Conor. Category 2 was won by Jeffrey Martin with 33pts and he has set an early marker for things to come. Pat Clarke claimed category 4 with a fine 29pts. Ciaran Byrne won his bottle of wine for his nearest the pin effort on 16th hole again kindly sponsored by our Captain Neville. There were five winners in the 2’s lead home by Eamonn McDonnell (2nd) Ollie Kierans (9th), Connor McEvoy (9th), Matthew Gaffney (11th) and John Clarke (16th). A huge thank you to Aidan Farrell, Jimmy Carolan and Noel McCormack for checking all cards and compiling the results sheet. Super work Gents!!!!

The matchplay qualifiers were all those who made 28pts or better plus on 27 year old namely Brían Clarke. ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina’ for those with less but there is always the hope of Luttrellstown Castle on Saturday 20th April. The missing heroes of yester years have promised to make a return for this beautiful parkland creation and their names will remain anonymous for the present. Our patience is running out………..

Captain’s Drive -In – The European Club 16/2/2019

Big swing - Small Man

A classic start to the journey……..

img_6319

Class is permanent!

A turnout of over 40 golfers witnessed the event. Captain Neville drove it straight and true onto the narrow fairway to tremendous applause. Not to be outdone our lean fit looking President Jim McArdle hit a screamer down the first to equal appreciation. What a start to their high office within the society. The wind blew loud and fierce for the duration which tested the patience and temperament of all. Cream always comes to the top and Niall McCaul from Main Street shot a very strong 29pts to emerge victorious. A great round of golf in the conditions. Category 1 was won by John Columb with 25pts which continues his fine form from last year – a serious competitor and operator. Category 2 went to Philip Sheridan with 27pts based on a very strong finish to his back nine. Here we have another serious player! Showing a welcome return to form was Damian Madden who claimed Category 3 with an impressive 26pts. Darren O’Reilly was obviously practicing hard over the last number of months to win Category 4. They say money follows money and this adage is very true when you look at today’s 2’s Patrick Maguire, John Columb, Niall McCaul and Ciaran Flanagan.

The generosity of our Captain is emphasised through with his novel new prize at each outing for nearest the pin on both nines. The golfer closest to the pin will receive a bottle of wine and if he birdies the hole he will receive a second bottle. If by chance the golfer three putts, he forfeits the wine and he buys our Captain a pint of Guinness. A fair deal.

A change in tradition took place today when Captain Nev addressed the gathering before golf with an enjoyable speech filled with shrewd observations and commentary. He appointed Vincent Cooney his  ‘Taxi’ for year despite his advancing years as his stand in for the presentation. The question being asked was Neville actually at the “Joe Show” or did he plead the 5th amendment. The jury is out! The spin is never ending. Next stop is Tyrellpass on March 23rd where the challenge of New Forest will be tested.

A massive thank you to Captain New, Vincent Cooney and Pat Clarke for checking all cards and formulating the final positions. Special mention to early clubhouse leader Niall Kelly who left many luminaries and wise crackers well behind with a 13th place finish. Niall was overheard in Limerick saying “Golf is a great leveller’ – a wise head on young shoulders but also a touch of genetics as well.

Finally, Happy 56th Birthday to Vincent Cooney!!!!!.

———————————————–

Are we there yet?

Just 6 more sleeps before Captain Nev and President Jim lights the torch for 2019 on the extraordinary links that is The European Club. Look at its latest ranking in Ireland’s best courses before you challenge your golf game and mental strength. Cannot wait to see the ‘New Kids in Town’ tackle the links. See you there lads!

More good news for ye. Our Captain Nev is sponsoring a Nearest the Pin on a designated hole on both the first nine and second nine at each outing. If the winner birdies the hole there is a bonus bottle for Andy.

This is not fake news: Bualadh Bos Nev!!!!!!

The society extends deepest sympathies to Terry Smith on the recent death of his mother Annie.

May her gentle soul rest in God’s love.

The madness is fast approaching lads……………

Happy New Year to all members and their families. May all enjoy peace, contentment and happiness throughout 2019.

New Broom Sweeps Clean……….

The smooth ascent of Neville Hall to Captaincy of our society was gracefully received by all in attendance. Nev laid down an early marker for the year when he left the normally reserved secretary speechless. However the silence was admirably broken by our new President Jim McArdle. On assuming office he felt he was a perfect candidate for the role. He stated he was statesman like in style and appearance and his silver waves gave him importance and presence. He spoke of his ability to hold an audience in speech or song and he was certain that members would look up to him even Brían Clarke.

The outline of the courses for 2019 was warmly approved and many were already sharpening their teeth for their February assault on The European Club.

Killeen Castle 19/5/’18

Captain Vincent has retained Liam’s relationship with the met office as all 39 golfers were treated to a brilliant sunny day with a gentle breeze cooling the lads. ‘Portugal at home’ said Gerard Denning. Martin McArdle returned to form with a most impressive winning score of 33pts. He was a clear winner and his tuition with Bill Noble is paying off. Category 1 was won by John Columb with 30pts and he is seldom out of the frame. Tom Clarke took category 2 with 27pts and it is nice to see a new name on the podium. Patrick Maguire kept the Noble flag flying high with an excellent 28pts and he reckons Flanners wont see the 17th hole in Corballis. Liam McIntyre’s early rising, domestic duties and fatherhood has reignited his golf game as he scored 30pts for a comfortable victory in category 4. Congratulations Liam and Clare on the birth of daughter Ellie and your good golf. Aiden Farrell’s 2 on the 14th allowed him to get full possession of the pot and he ended up €82 richer. Thank you again for your contribution to the Ann Clerkin fund and your support on Saturday would be most welcome.

Breaking News: Matchplay shock as Maguire guns down McDonnell in a cliffhanger. A pattern of members conceding shots being bowled over continued over the week with Gavin Mackey outplaying an off form Gerry Eagleton. Ciaran Flanagan brought all his experience around Corballis to surprise Sean O’Sullivan. New member Andy Boland took down smooth swinging Paddy Byrne around Headford. Our Captain took an early shower after a scintillating performance around Headford by Thomas Liggan. Defending champion Seamus just edged out Richard McEvoy in a topsy -turvy game. Is Andy worried if this pattern continues? Keep the results flowing lads ……………more to follow

Captain Vincent’s Drive In.

We are back in full swing after the winter hiatus under the Captaincy of Vincent Barry. Vincent’s popularity was in clear evidence with 44 members present for his Drive- In at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links in February sunshine. His long drive found the fairway after  a slight right to left cut. Our President Eric found top gear with his driver and his ball nestled also on the fairway. Eric received warm applause from the gallery upon his return to action after his golf in 2017 was badly interrupted  with a serious foot injury.

The scoring was dominated by the younger brigade with only one oldie reaching the frame. Alan O’Mara despite a slight hamstring strain found the links very suitable to his game and his 38pts was a terrific achievement. Obviously he found the fast greens to his liking and playing with Andy Coleman held no fears for him. With 33pts Sean McCabe claimed category 1 and kept the oldies in the prize giving arena. Category 2 went to Kieran Rogers on 32pts and after his performance for Knockbride Juniors last year he qualifies for the youthful ranks. Aiden Martin had a great day and his category 3 win was attained after scoring 33pts. His 40′ birdie putt for a 2 earned him the 86 euro pot. With a wonderful 36pts James Cooney won category 4 and his ideal preparation of no drink the night before and a solid 12 hour sleep certainly paid dividends. The work of scoring the cards and finalising winners was very professional achieved by Brian Clarke and Jimmy Carolan. Well done lads and sincerest thanks from all in the society. The lack of any Virginia presence was notable and the question of a postal failure was posed as a possible cause. We expect a massive turnout for Tulfarris and the first qualifier for the Tom Clarke Cup. A good turnout for Vincent’s maiden presentation brought a most enjoyable day to a sociable conclusion.

Vinnie’s Day.

Our outing to Rossmore on 7th October turned into a Vincent Cooney benevolent day. His return to form augurs well for his chances around Doonbeg and Dromoland later this month. His 36 pts on a mild damp morning proved well out of reach of his fellow 32 competitors. He won 1st prize on the day and coupled with his 29pts in The Heritage he won the overnight stay in the Ballesteros suite overlooking the Slieve Bloom mountains.

A happy Vincent receives his Rossmore prize from Captain Liam.

THE CAT THAT GOT THE CREAM!!!

THE CAT THAT GOT THE CREAM!

Will Nev his caddy be invited or will Hendricks make an appearance? Enjoy it anyway Vincent and heartiest congratulations on your double success. Category 1 went the way of John Columb which represents a hat trick of victories for him. Philip Sheridan acquired the Category 2 prize with an excellent 34pts to pip an in form Eamonn McDonnell. Category 3 was won with 33pts scored by Martin McArdle and he has kept the family name in lights while dad recuperates from recent back surgery. Gerard Denning availed of John Mac’s lift to shoot 30pts and bring home category 4 prize.

All roads are heading to the Banner County on Friday 27th October and Saturday 28th for our bonding and team building session. All aspects of each member’s golf game will be assessed with lessons provided on driving, chipping and putting. Psychological workshops are planned each day and members must attend this vital aspect of the game. Looking forward to meeting you all there and please bring a copy and pen with you.

After the excitement and splendour of Captain’s Day we are now back to the bread and butter days of our society.  Saturday 7th October brings us to the newly designed and greatly improved Rossmore Golf course.Hot favourite to claim the jam of an overnight stay in The Heritage is that determined competitor Paul Kelly from dark horse Neville Hall. A victory for Nev would save him a visit to see Big Ben yet again. Inspired wisdom contends J. Mac has his heart set on upsetting both boyos and having the last laugh. Tee time commences at 10.00am to 11.20am and any Lip Sync competitors are assured of an early start time. To coincide with the show in Killinkere Leisure Centre at 8.00pm it is proposed to have the presentation immediately upon our return to town no later than 6.00pm. Just to whet the appetite for hilarity and laughter. Here’s to a cracking day’s golf and an evening of great fun!!!

Captain’s Day Headfort Golf 2/9/2017

Captain Liam’s Day at Headfort Golf Club on Saturday last was simply a fantastic occasion from start to whenever it finished. Despite a delay due to early morning fog the day rolled smoothly along with snacks and water greeting all 58 players on the first tee. Come the tenth Liam’s generosity ensured a succulent dressed burger and coke brought all players home well satiated. Even the sun came out and a freshening breeze kept the winning scores very competitive. Top of the class on the day was Vincent Barry with a carefully compiled score of 37pts. In his victory speech he accepted the friendly bounces from trees but his expert short game aided by a wonderful putting touch ensured his success.

img_0071

Vincent Barry proudly accepts Captain Liam’s prize. “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.

The fierce competition for podium finishes was again highlighted with back nines separating John Columb from Philip Sheridan who both matched Vincent’s winning score. John’s back nine of 22pts was a terrific effort after a shaky start. This was John’s third success in as many outings and he is a serious addition to the society. Philip’s great run of good scores is also very noticeable and he has put himself in a strong position to win golfer of the year. Philip had to attend a stag party and had to forego the presentation although his 3rd prize watch is in safe hands.

img_0070

John Columb accepts his subtle crystal lamp from Liam. Well done!

Recent new member Alan O’Mara bagged the high handicap prize with a cracking 34pts greatly helped by a terrific birdie on the 8th where he nearly had to dress the mahogany. This two allowed him to share the pot with Fintan Cahill, Gerry Eagleton, John Columb and Richard McEvoy. The best gross was won by Andy Coleman with 27pts from his main rivals Sean, Aidan and Gerry.

Alan O'Mara claims his first society prize on a Major Day. A golfer to watch.

The front nine was claimed by Aidan Farrell with 19pts amid rumours that he may have to pass a drug test at future outings. Best back nine was brought home by Seamus Sheridan whose 18pts just held on.

Nixy’s beams his way to the Past Captain’s prize leaving quality golfers in his wake.

On difficult par 3’s the quality of ball striking by both winners was of the highest calibre and Sean McCabe got within 8′ on the eighth hole while Richard stuck it to 13′ on the fourteenth. (Sadly, both missed their birdies)

Just one of many fine shots hit by Sean during the round.

Pat Clarke must come back next year after a superb score of 36pts easily outscored most to bring a lovely top home with him. David Rogers gained the best student award with 26pts just before he returns to UL to continue his degree.

"Baby come back"

“Baby come back”

Best student award belongs to David Rogers.

Best student award belongs to David Rogers.

The efficiency and smooth running of the day was greatly assisted by the following members who took responsibility for their assigned areas. Gavin Mackey and Richard McEvoy ensured everyone paid and had their cards entered into staggered draws without fuss or hitch. The onerous task of checking scores and differentiating the various winners fell on the broad (and tall in the case of one) shoulders of Sean McCabe and Brían Clarke. Their meticulous work guaranteed the accuracy of all winners. Mark Argue and Adrian Kelly looked after the prizes displaying them in Headfort and bringing them back safely to the presentation. The addition of pictures to the report is the work of Andy Coleman – a good photographer as well as a golfer.   Lads a most sincere Thank You!

Our injured President Eric received a warm reception from the gathering and his witty update on his medical recovery from a recent operation and the serious impact it has made on his lifestyle was much appreciated.

The sustained warm applause that greeted Liam’s nomination of Vincent Barry as in-coming Captain was wonderful. Vincent expressed his surprise delight at the honour and complimented Liam on his great day and year so far. He thanked everyone for their best wishes and was already looking forward to 2018.

A massive thank is extended to all 58 members who honoured Liam by playing golf and the 43 who savoured the brilliant steaks and desserts provided by the Bailie Hotel and the buzz they generated. Last word goes to Liam for a brilliant day graced with generosity and crack. Well done Captain!

Will the owner please come forward

A delighted Michéal accepts his prize for his brilliance around the Faldo course.

The popularity and esteem that members hold the Faldo creation is very obvious from the 44 members who played in our outing on Saturday last. The calm benign sunny conditions assisted by the yellow beacons embellished the scoring and the cream came to the top in all categories. Bringing competitiveness and self-confidence to the course Michéal Clarke scorched around in a most impressive 39pts and picked off a 2 as well. This made for a six – way share of the loot with John Columb, Sean McCabe, Gerry Denning, Jeffrey Martin and Philip Sheridan.

Sean O’Sullivan is a capable stand in for Martin McArdle.

Philip Sheridan gave a gritty determined performance in compiling his 38pts and his smooth tempo on the greens certainly helped. A fine round of golf Phiip and a clear victor in Category 2. His nap after golf resulted in brother Gerry accepting his prize and hopefully it ignited Gerry’s ambition to give the game a serious go. John Columb’s 37pts was easily sufficient to win him Category 1 – his second victory in as many outings and highlighted with a cracking 2 on the demanding pin placement on the 18th. Darren O’Reilly replicated John’s feat in winning back-to-back prizes and his excellent 34pts gave him the Category 4 prize. Darren’s present play will surely gain him a new category in the near future and he is now joint favourite with Neville to bring home Liam’s Captain’s Prize. Martin McArdle won Category 3 with a fine 32pts and the conventional wisdom is that he has replaced his father Jim as the standard bearer in the family. However, we are all delighted to hear Jim is making smashing progress following surgery and he is quietly confident of being back in action before Tiger. We miss you!!!!

Members are eagerly awaiting Captain Liam’s Prize on Saturday 2nd September and strict monitoring is already in place for secret practice rounds around the Old course in advance. Despite the practice our Elite bookmaker is amazingly confident that Neville Hall will demolish all comers with a strong challenge likely from course members Gavin Mackey, Jeffrey Martin, Jimmy Carolan (Honorary Member) and of course Darren O’Reilly. The remaining excitement centred on the match play final draw. Here, warm favourite Vincent Cooney added to his chances of success with having choice of recommending a neutral 18 hole course for his game against Sheamie. The winner after the final will be golf.

Concra Woods 8/7/2017

“And I was thinking to myself
‘This could be heaven or this could be Hell’……….Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)”.

Could these lyrics summarize the many mood swings that our 44 golfers endured at a sun drenched Concra on Saturday last. The amazing scenery, the high quality course and the brilliant sunshine all combined to give members a glance at paradise but some of the scoring indicated that paradise was also “lost”. Sean O’ Sullivan and John Columb certainly reached dizzy heights around the Christy O’Connor creation. They both scored  very impressive 38pts and Sean claimed his victory with a better back nine. His hot run of form in our matchplay was replicated on Saturday and despite his loss of 3 shots he is now joint favourite with Vincent Cooney to claim a first in the Tom Clarke Cup. What a year for the O’Sullivan /Kelly dynasty and from all accounts they are far from finished with Declan and Niall both waiting in the wings. John Columb’s excellent score of 12 easily won him category 1 and marked him out as a very strong contender to capture Liam’s Captain’s Prize in September around his home course. Category 2 was won by Vincent Barry with 34pts and his Kerry form is gradually reappearing and he has the potential and ability to claim a major very soon. Neville Hall clinched yet another prize claiming category 3 with an excellent 32pts. Is Nev about to drop the bridesmaid tag?

Category 4 was narrowly won by Darren O’Reilly with 31pts just pipping Aiden Liggan on 30pts. The early birds found scoring difficult and it was very brave of Ciaran Flanagan to declare he wanted to go out first and be the early leader in the clubhouse. From reliable reports he missed his target.

The happiest man of the day was Sean McCabe who strolled away with €88 with the only two of the day. Does that speak volumes for the quality of the par 3’s or the bravery of the winner ? Brendan Foley, a friend of the society from our sojourn in Kerry last October carded a wonderful best of the day 39pts. After the presentation, many members enjoyed their evening and were treated to Nev performing “The feet of a dancer” and displaying why he finished in 5th place in the “Strictly Come Dancing” on Easter Saturday. A serious talent on and off the course. Why not end with Lou Reed’s lyrics ………………….

"Oh, it's such a perfect day I'm glad I spent it with you Oh,… "

“Oh, it’s such a perfect day
I’m glad I spent it with you

President Eric’s Day at Slieve Russell 10/6/2017

WOW!  A record breaking 53 members turned out and competed for President Eric Davidson’s prize on Saturday last. Eric’s attention to detail was in evidence throughout the day and his powers of persuasion with the Divine to give bright warm blustery weather was most obliging. The course took its toll on many and the cream of the society relished the conditions and bagged the prizes.

Congratulations Jimmy! Could be father and son.

Congratulations Jimmy! Could be father and son.

Jimmy Carolan hit a cracking 35pts off 10 to narrowly pip his playing partner and former friend Patrick Maguire on a better back nine. A thrilled and delighted Jimmy graciously accepted his lovely new bag from Eric and complimented him on his choice of Red colour – Shamrocks and united. In light of his golfing prowess he gently reminded members to call him (just) Jimmy from now on. Patrick Maguire accepted his prize and spoke glowingly and at length of the esteem he holds Eric in. He said “They are soul mates, men of the land and social buds.” He blamed his defeat on a “bunker” up the 18th hole while Jimmy spoke of it as bottling it. Patrick used his speech as a dress rehearsal for a major event coming up on a July Thursday in the Wee County.

What can we say about 3rd placed Neville Hall also on 35pts. He saw a lip out on the 16th and “A whore of a bush” on the 18th as the pivotal moments in his round. A hugely respected society member expects Neville to put this reverse  and also his recent runner up position in the Doubtfuls’ Captain’s Prize last month behind him and claim Liam’s prize in September. Cometh the hour, cometh the man!

Buds alright!

Our Sergio!

David Rooney clinched his first gross prize on a better back nine from our legend Gerry Eagleton on 26pts. His continuing progression is a joy to witness and his ambition to replace Andy Coleman as our lowest handicapper is gaining momentum and credence. Less or more Salou Andy! David Rogers on 29pts was the winner of the high handicap section. His stint in this category is surely at an end with his talent. Kieran’s position as the leading golfer in the house is under serious threat.

Another first for our rising Star!

This is brother Stephen accepting Brian's prize.

This is brother Stephen accepting Brian’s prize.

The first nine proved proved proved impossible to call between Gerry Eagleton and Aiden Farrell on 18pts after every count back in existence. In accordance with society rules they both got a prize and President Eric was mightily relieved that the count back sorted the overall winner or he would have had to dig deeper into his pension fund.

Congrats Gerry!

"Gerry, this is mine's" says Aidan.

Shane McHugh happily collected his first prize with the society when his 18pts was sufficient to win the back nine. Good to see Shane is starting to fulfil his potential when he plays with us. Is the lad under the thumb already? “Class is permanent ” they say and two men Brían Clarke and Brian McBreen certainly highlighted this with the precision and accuracy of their tee shots on the 11th and 16th holes. They won nearest the pin with Brían hitting to 8′ . 9″ on the 11th and Young McBreen to within 4′.3″ on the 16th hole. For big men they definitely have the delicate touch. Young Reece Clarke was an impressive winner of the visitor’s prize and he was encouraged to become a full member immediately.

Sean McCabe’s scoring and ranking of the cards is deeply appreciated and a valuable assistance to the smooth running of the day. The desk operation headed by John Clarke and Gavin Mackey worked superbly with all monies accounted for and draws running like clockwork – even Ciaran Flanagan eventually got out!!! A massive thank you to the 30 members who attended the presentation and joined in the banter and craic of the night. Full marks to Nixy and his catering team for feeding us again with barbecued food to the sound and beat of Brendan McCahey. I know he dedicated “What’s another year” to the also rans while he sent Jimmy Carolan home to bed with the words of “Oh! What a night” ringing in his head.

Greenore Golf Outing 20/5/2017

33 members thoroughly enjoyed the serene beauty of Greenore Golf course and its intricate nature on Saturday last. They say class is permanent and a delighted Gerard Denning rediscovered his former glory days with a blistering display of course management and quality golf to claim the honours. Obviously, his long hours of practice on his chipping has proved successful. His 36pts was most impressive and he held off Richard McEvoy on 35pts. Richard shot an amazing 24pts on the front nine but he explained his loss of concentration and swing tempo on the back nine was caused by having to rush home for Molly’s prenatal class. His reward was the category 2 prize and he was joined on the podium by Jimmy Carolan who claimed category 1 with 33pts. Jimmy went home early to prepare for his matchplay and he kept his word and stayed best friends with Ella.

A Happy Jimmy congratulated by Captain Liam.

Richard delighted with his return to the winners enclosure.

Our President Eric Davidson scored well and his 32pts was best in category 3. Eric showed signs of nerves on the night as he ponders his Presidential address for Saturday 10th June in Slieve Russell. James Cooney had 34pts and he duly won category 4 and it was compensation for his narrow defeat in the matchplay the previous day. David Rogers with a 2 on the 7th and Niall McCaul with one (not an ace) on the 10th shared the loot and earned €33 each.  The draw for the matchplay threw up some intriguing pairings and the real crowd puller is the game between the cool calm Paul Kelly and the exuberant big hitting Michael Kearney. Congratulations are extended to Noel McCormack on his great run and time in the recent London Marathon. A superb achievement Noel. Well Done! Bon voyage to our members who are trail blazing in Portugal this week ably led by Neville Hall our resident pro.

All members are encouraged to support the Charity walk /run in memory of Ann Clerkin Curkish at 11.00am from BDA offices on Saturday next 27th May.

The Heritage Golf Resort 15/4/2017

Simply, a one man’s show from tee off to bedtime. The unheralded return to top class form by the forgotten man of the society was truly amazing. He spreadeagled the field with an awesome round leaving the ever consistent and ultra reliable John McFadden a distant second. Where did this turn around come from? After lurking near the pace in Mullingar he grasped the opportunity of finding fairways, hitting greens, mastering the putting and making The Heritage his Augusta. You cannot dismiss class and Paul Kelly with a stunning 36pts just oozed it. His wide margin victory has literally made the Rossmore outing academic to the overall twinning result and he has the night away with Anne virtually sealed. In his acceptance speech he dedicated his performance to the over 50’s and plus.

A look at the results demonstrates what a momentous outing it was for our senior members of the society. Cat 1 winner Declan O’Sullivan on 30pts has well climbed the 40 barrier while Cat 2 winner Gerry Kellett with 29pts has certainly put 50 well behind him. Cat 3 winner Patrick Maguire also with 29pts has said goodbye to 59 many moons ago while Cat 4 winner John McFadden is chasing a different number altogether. However, let’s salute our mature winners and throw the ball back into the court of the young tigers for Greenore. Qualification for the matchplay was within easy reach of most and the last spot was nailed down by newcomer Ciaran Flanagan.   Some intriguing pairs were drawn such as Vincent Cooney v Philip Sheridan and David Rooney taking on past winner Gerry Denning. However the match of the round is between Andy Coleman (1) playing the wily match player Jimmy Carolan (11). Both men have stated they are joining the celibate life until they play while Paul Kelly continues to celebrate his win despite Mark Argue’s hunger for a major scalp. Full draw available under Matchplay draw and results 2017. There will be shocks – “make no mistake about it.” For the third outing in a row Gavin Mackey had a free day with yet another 2.

Congratulations are extended to our 4 fleet of foot members Captain Liam, Pat Clarke, Padraic Clarke and Neville Hall who pranced and danced the floorboards for weeks in aid of Knockbride pitch development. They were all brilliant according to resident spy Niall and they were all winners. Big question will it bring a new rhythm, tempo and pace to their golf game? The jury is out ………but Greenore will test the theory on Saturday 20th May.

Mullingar Golf Club 25/03/2017

Nine years on Mullingar  Golf Club again proved popular with 43 members facing the starter. Brilliant sunshine greeted the early morning starters and the application of sun lotion and the discarding of the flamboyant red was common place. The severely shortened course irked many members with the pars 5 significantly reduced and the par 3’s dominated by far too forward mats. Our disappointment with the course set up was further exacerbated by the lack of any prior notice or gesture of goodwill. However when the final count was completed by Gerry Eagleton assisted by Sean McCabe the man of the day was our resident comedian Jeffrey Martin. His management of the course and slick greens enabled him to shoot a most impressive 42pts. His Headfort hot form is obviously not a flash in the pan and he gleefully accepted his first prize from Captain Liam.

Our Jeff back where he belongs!!

Our Jeff – back where he belongs!!

Right behind him was the returning Philip Sheridan who scored a well crafted 41pts to claim Category 2. At the presentation Philip returned to his old habits and engaged in some “fluting” around. Mum’s the word! David Coleman equaled Philip’s score with excellent golf but the complexity of categories kept him out of the winners. However, he easily qualified for the matchplay, collected one of the six 2’s and lost no shot. David joined Gavin Mackey, Aidan Farrell, Martin McArdle, Niall Kelly and Richard McEvoy as the other 2’s winners. Aidan Farrell claimed Category 1 with 37pts highlighted by a terrific shot into the 15th hole and the jovial company of his out of sorts playing partners.

A smiling David portrays the spirit of golf

He made it!!!

Category 3 was won by the ever present early bird and highly respected Neville Hall also with 37pts. Reports emanating from most reliable sources would suggest that over exuberance around the 16th and 17th holes deprived him of upstaging his protégé Jeffrey. Neville should win the next outing on Saturday 15th April as his golfing idol was the mercurial Seve who designed The Heritage. Category 4 came the way of Lester Kinnear (alias Steady Eddie) with 30pts and he dedicated his success to the free buggy ride from our esteemed President Eric.

Neville also won the best dressed gent!

I hope its Aidan's prize

I hope its Aidan’s prize.

Our lucky qualifiers from day 1 were Jeffrey Martin, Philip Sheridan, David Coleman, Michael Kearney, Aidan Farrell, Paddy Byrne, Neville Hall, Paul Kelly, Eamonn McDonnell, Vincent Cooney, Gerry Kellett, Billy McLoughlin, Niall Kelly, Sean O’Sullivan and Gerry Eagleton. Defending champion David Rooney is automatically qualified.

Looking forward to The Heritage on Saturday 15th April and best wishes to our dancers Neville Hall, Pat Clarke, Captain Liam and former President Padraic Clarke on the same night in the Kilmore Hotel.

Will their new found fancy steps, hip movements, rhythm and synchronised waving pave the way for improved golf?

Best wishes to Noel McCormack as he winds down for the London marathon in aid of The Irish Heart Foundation and if you haven’t already contributed there is still time to be a “good heart”.

Seapoint Golf Club 11 /02/2017

Members hoping Captain Liam and President Eric hit the perfect drive into office.

48 members braved Baltic like conditions to witness and encourage Captain Liam and President Eric  drive into office at Seapoint Golf Club on Saturday last.

A bitterly cold and windy Seapoint Golf course greeted a staggering 48 members to a tremendous start to our 2017 calendar. Captain Liam and President Eric dissected the 10th fairway with two super drives to warm applause from the excited gallery. A feature of the day was the presence of many new members and we hope they enjoyed their day and are looking forward to the year. Tomas Liggan defied everything the east coast could throw at him and he came home well ahead of the field with 35pts. A great score in the conditions and he has put down a serious marker for the season ahead. I believe he sorted out Valentine’s as well. Category 1 was collected by Andy Coleman with 31pts playing of 2 and his practice rounds around Headfort certainly stood to him. A delighted Gerry Kellett claimed Category 2 with 28pts while the ice cool Aidan Martin won Category 3 on 32pts. Quite a weekend for the Liggan family with Aidan bringing home the Category 4 prize. Will Jim Liggan come out of retirement now??? The twos proved difficult with only Andy Coleman and Gavin Mackey hitting the jackpot which rewarded them richly. Our next outing is on March 25th in Mullingar and is a qualifier for the matchplay. Captain Liam has promised warm sunshine for the remainder of the year.

  New Year Greetings

Happy New Year to all our members and their families as we excitedly look forward to Saturday 11th February and the start of our 2017 golfing season. A warm welcome is extended to Captain Liam and President Eric as they become fully fledged members of the clique. Their “drive in” into office is on the vast open expanse of the 1st hole of Seapoint. Andy Coleman and Sean McCabe reckon they will drive the ball pass the drain close to the green. All bets are on. We hope the rusty golfers or non Headfort members make a special effort to witness this attempted feat.  Looking forward to seeing you on the day bright and early and fully togged out in our daring red.  A very important change has been made to our fixture card for our outing to Mullingar Golf course.  This outing is now arranged for  Saturday 25th March  commencing at 10.00am to 11.30am.

AGM

Our AGM was a most constructive meeting with many views and opinions discussed. Captain Kieran expressed delight and pride on his year and he paid a special compliment to the “Man Above” for looking after the weather so well for us. His own personal highlight was the weekend away hiding in the dunes of Waterville and of course The Speakeasy. He wished Liam a successful year and thanked all members for their full support. In accepting the honour of being Captain, Liam was delighted with the privilege of leading such a wonderful bunch of golfers and friends. He had big steps to fill but reckoned that Mountainlodge would not fall short. To warm applause Eric Davidson was approved as our President and he stated his reign would be Trump like and he wanted to continue building the profile of the society.  The fixture card for 2017 was discussed with many venues put into the mix with Headford Old designated to Liam’s Captain’s Day. Lough Erne was retained for this year’s calendar so our deposit could be availed of.

The moral of the story………….

Monster jumble sale on St. Stephen’s Day in Nixy’s at 5.30pm of every variety and range of golf club. Great deals assured as this massive collections will include clubs from all the top brands and a few from the antique vaults. This is the result of last Saturday’s outing to Virginia when the hot scoring with just 3 clubs in the bag resulted in many members deciding to reduce decision making and eliminate doubts by offering their spanners for sale.  The hottest clubs will most definitely come from Sean McEvoy who shot a fantastic 39pts with 23 on the back nine. What a start to his year as Captain of Virginia? Category 1 prize was captured by our golfer of the year David Rooney with 34pts while on a similiar mark Brían Clarke took category 2. Our new President Eric Davidson claimed category 3 with 35pts to just pip our forty-niner Patrick Maguire. New Captain Liam McIntyre also stormed home on the back nine to bring to take home category 4. The remaining golfers were satisfied with their  bottle of wine kindly sponsored by Neville Hall. Then a quick shower, shave, groom and food before the hooley, where Captain kindly decorated the mahogany………………………there the story ends.

New Headfort

Another fabulous November morning greeted 37 members to the New Course which played its full length. Compliments to the course staff who produced slick greens that caught out many unsuspecting golfers with their speed and roll. Philip Rogers produced stunning golf to score 34pts and just pipped our lowest handicapped golfer Andy Coleman on the last 6. A remarkable performance by Philip to top a quality field and continue an excellent golfing year for the family. Andy’s round which contained 5 birdies scooped category 1 prize while category 2 was won by back in form Richard McEvoy. Martin McArdle claimed category 3 while Adrian Kelly’s good golf captured category 4 with 33pts. The 5 winners of the 2’s shared the pool and our thanks go to John Clarke, Andy Coleman and Brían Clarke for the smooth running of the day through their work on the desk, checking cards and sorting out winners. Word on the street says Brían is growing into the master of ceremony role and is throwing his hat into the ring for the job in 2017. Keep 10th December free for our AGM at 11.00am followed by our 3 club competition and of course our own wee hooley.

Rathcore Outing

There was universal acclaim and approval for the excellent greens and the unique intrigue of Rathcore Golf course by all members on Saturday last. The beautiful autumnal weather paid its own compliments to the outing and made for a easy going presentation and chat late into the night. How some could put less trivial pursuits ahead of the day was beyond most? What a month October has become for our great supporting member Vincent Barry? Following his clean up in Kerry he continued to execute all the shots around Rathcore to hold off Terry Smith and Aiden Martin. His fine 35pts built on steady golf and super course management made him a popular winner. Terry Smith also fresh from his Concra victory in September collected category 1 with 34pts with Michael Kearney defeating all comers in category 2. Aiden Martin’s equal 2nd best score on the day secured him the category 3 prize while Darren O’Reilly claimed the category 4 prize with a noteworthy 33pts. There were only 3 twos over the day and Terry Smith, Richard McEvoy and Neville Hall shared the loot.

The twinning competition of Rathcore with The Heritage earlier in the year went down to a count back. Our Captain Kieran just pipped Michael Kearney after both finished on 63pts for both courses with Kieran’s 30pts on the day outscoring Michael’s efforts by the minimum margin. Special thanks to Aidan Farrell for checking the cards and determining the winners. Another highlight of the day was the stylish and polished performance of Brían Clarke as the night’s raconteur and overall master of ceremony. A hidden talent that needs unleashing. The failure of some Kerry notables to appear on Saturday resulted in Paddy Farrell questioning their stamina and prowess. Do you agree Fintan, Sean and Eamonn?

There was golf played!

Golf Classic

All teams competing in our classic matched the beautiful weather with plenty of craic and good humour. From the first ball struck by Peter Crosby on Friday morning at 8.00pm to the last putt by Ciaran Galligan at 7.00pm on Saturday it was obvious that winning was secondary and the cause was paramount. With 38 teams playing the standard of golf was high with strong commitment from everyone to simply enjoy their time. A few highlights over the two days included Sean McCabe’s team finishing out under the light of a mobile,  Andy Coleman finishing -7 on his own card, the return of Noel (Snowy) Smith to golf and the influx of new talent like Shane Dillon, Sean Farrelly, Enda Sheridan, Martin Clarke and Barry Smith. The future is rosy.

The refreshments before and after golf were fantastic. Golfers availed of freshly made healthy sandwiches, delicious scones, sumptuous desserts, savoury cakes and lashings of rich cream and jams. The baking, preparation, presentation and serving of these treats were carried out by the crack team of Deirdre, Carrie Lea, Olive and Patricia ably supported by Isobel, Katie and Mary. Sincere thanks ladies for your trojan work and dedication for the event. Supplementing the food, tea and coffee was the bar generously sponsored by our Captain Kieran. No one left the building either hungry or thirsty but some left it scarred after the bon mot. The condition and presentation of the course was super and we thank Virginia Golf Club for their courtesy and cooperation in the build up and during the event. To all our sponsors who kindly and willingly donated to the golf classic we offer our wholehearted appreciation.

Now to the golf! We got players from all categories of handicaps and we even invented a few new ones after the experience. Pride of place goes to the astute Michéal Clarke who after several trials and practice rounds brought a youthful, talented, experienced and cute team home in 1st place. Their score of 101 was never threatened and they held off the challenge of several teams on 96pts.

 Mr. Larry Farrell’s Perpetual Trophy

” O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. That’s a very apt summary of what happened at Concra Wood Golf course on Saturday last. Those of you who peeped out, saw the light rain and returned to action missed the splendour of this scenic haven. Fantastic greens, dry well groomed fairways and stunning beauty ensured that all 36 members returned back to base delighted with their day. None more so than Terry Smith to returned to the winning podium with a very creditable 33pts despite three blow outs. His love affair with the Larry Farrell Trophy remains unabated and he allows pocketed a two alongside Kieran Rogers, David Rogers and Michael Kearney. Category 1 prize went to Andy Coleman on 30pts playing of four while Captain Kieran won category 2 with a fine 31pts. Keeping pace with younger brother Andy David Coleman claimed the category 3 prize on 28pts while James Cooney with 29pts took the category 4 prize. Our thoughts and energy now turns to our Cancer Comfort Ltd Golf Classic on Friday 16th September and Saturday 17th September. All support and help most welcome. See you there!

Martin proudly accepts his fantastic prize from Captain Kieran. Congratulations Martin on your tremendous achievement!!

“Oh! What a day?”  Kieran Rogers had an outstandingly successful Captain’s Day around the shores of Lough Erne on Saturday last. Fifty one bushy eyed golfers took on the challenge of the pristine manicured course and tales of woe and misfortune became the common theme as the wind got up. However, Martin McArdle blew the field away with a wonderful 37pts to clinch a memorable victory. His achievement is all the more worthwhile considering he is only a member for a few years. To hold his nerve over the round in testing conditions is testimony to his calm temperament and cool disposition – a chip of the old block. Martin walked away with the fantastic prize of the latest motorised trolley. In 2nd place was Philip Rogers, Kieran’s son, who scored a very creditable 34pts. This is Philip’s second time to finish runner-up and his first major surely awaits around the corner. The gross prize was claimed by Andy Coleman from the rapidly improving David Rooney. Gavin Mackey in 3rd place will bring his fine crystal lamp to Ongar and add further embellishment to his recently painted pad. It will no doubt add to the romantic ambience of his sitting room.

A Ted Baker wallet and credit card holder brought a broad smile to high handicap winner and close friend of our Captain Brian McBreen.  Keeping the balance within the McBreen family  brother Stephen secured the back nine prize. Stephen was last seen restocking his wine cellar. Michéal Clarke produced the best score  on the front nine and a few costly errors on the back nine hampered his progress up the leaderboard. Again showing his liking for the course where he won the 2013 Captain’s Prize Brían Clarke played steadily to win the Past Captain’s award from a select field. Both winners of the nearest the pin competitions hit their ball to 12 feet with Terry Smith hitting a sweet one into the 3rd green while Michael Reilly overcame the wind on the 15th. I believe Terry and Michael are both relaxing with a good brandy.  Again keeping it within the family David Rogers took the student prize and he proudly walked away with a classy close fitting muscle bulging T shirt. Paul Ward hit an excellent 35pts to sweep aside all opposition in the visitor’s section and his birdie two on the 18th gave him a 51/51 divide with regular benefactor Andy Coleman. Brían Clarke was deeply honoured and emotionally moved to regain the “Old Fart” trophy from an equally distraught and inconsolable Jim McArdle on losing his last bastion of being a winner. The fact that Brían will shower his new friend with an abundance of love, daily care and attention and of course a weekly wax eased  Jim’s heartbreak. The day started with goodies sponsored by Kieran and finished with a tasty dinner and presentation of prizes with banter galore. To rapturous applause and oceans of good wishes Liam McIntyre accepted the honour of being our 21st Captain. The day finished with Kieran kindly dressing the mahogany in Nixy’s and the rest is history and consigned to the archives.

Congratulations

We offer congratulations from all members to Terry Smith on his smashing performance in strolling to victory in President Victor Nesbitt’s on Sunday last. He left a classy field a full 5 shots behind and with his new presidential club he has been promoted clear favourite to win both the club and society Captain prizes in August. Elite betting are offering him at 6/1 to complete the double and new hotshot David Rooney is quite upset at his demotion from the top of the betting lists.

Killeen Castle Outing

GUBU!!! Greatness, unique, brilliant and unbelievable are just four words to describe our latest sensation that is David Rooney. Another stunning performance of 37pts around Killeen Castle gave him a two point winning margin over his nearest challenger Sean O’Sullivan. This rich vein of form is testimony to a very fine golfer who has lost 10 shots over the last four outings. The question is has the handicapper caught up with David? Word on the grapevine is that Jeffrey is certain he has and he is quietly confident of meeting his idol Vincent Cooney in the final of the matchplay and actually beating him. Our category winners were Gavin Mackey in Category 1 with an excellent 33pts after an early bedtime the previous night. Category 2 was won by Vincent Cooney with 30pts and his delight was slightly tempered by a one shot deduction prior to his semi final date with Aidan Farrell. Sean O’Sullivan was a clear winner of category 3 with 35pts – the second best score of the day. Paddy Farrell showed his category 4 rivals a clean pair of heels to take home the voucher. Only three 2’s were recorded and the loot was shared between Sean McCabe, Denis O’Leary and Michael Reilly who actually went to within a whisker of a hole in one. The visitor’s prize was won by Robert O’Leary. Our sincere thanks to the Mannan 3 of Paddy, Brían and Damien for looking after the outing from start to finish while the hierarchy journeyed to Clones.  Next  outing is Kieran’s Captain’s Day around the shores of Lough Erne and the question is who will be second. The chat and banter after the presentation eased the Clones pain but issued headaches later on.

A delighted but seemingly hungry winner is Mr. David Rooney of President Padraic Clarke's beautiful prize.

A delighted but seemingly hungry winner is Mr. David Rooney of President Padraic Clarke’s beautiful prize.

President Padraic Clarke’s Prize 11/06/2016

Glorious weather, the outstanding Slieve Russell course but above all Padraic Clarke’s popularity and status in the society swelled the numbers on Saturday last. Hot favourite Jeffrey Martin buckled under the pressure while a bout of pre-match nerves on their way to the course scuppered Johhny Mac and Hugh Brady’s challenge.  The late withdrawal of Michéal Clarke due to an injury picked up during Friday’s practice round and Paul Kelly’s sudden but secretive departure to Barel Refugio requires ‘no comment”. Still 45 golfers initially contemplated their game plan but a plethora of bunkers and the lush juicy rough soon threw doubts into many mindsets. However David Rooney soared from the pack with a winning score of 37pts and claim back to back victories. In presenting his magnificent prize to David, President Padraic alluded to his many strengths as a golfer and unique characteristics as a person in very colourful and effusive language. As one witty quack retorted “David you may build a house to accommodate the prize.” A very popular and deserving winner!

Runner up was Mark Argue on 36pts and his staggering progress over the last 6 months is absolutely amazing. Definitely a winner in waiting and who would back against him from lifting our next major in August. Fresh from his brilliant performance in the Headfort Junior Cup where he won best nett Andy Coleman collected the gross. As your protégé would say “Simply the Best.” Third place went deservedly to Declan O’Sullivan also on 36pts and was worthy compensation for narrowly missing out on a prize in Palmerstown. Declan clearly relishes the Majors and went within a whisker to adding the President’s to last year’s Captain’s. Our thanks are extended to Declan and Captain Kieran for checking the cards and declaring the prize winners. Thomas Liggan claimed fourth place with 35pts and his return to form is most satisfying and welcomed.

Eamonn McDonnell won the first nine with 19pts and rightly blamed fatigue from the excesses of Friday’s wedding attendance on his faltering second nine. Spurred on by his playing partners Shane Brogan put an indifferent start behind him to top the back nine on 18pts. The accuracy of Martin McArdle on the 11th won him nearest the pin and recorded another successful blow in his rivalry with the legendary Jim – also his loving father. To emphasize the depth of their competition Martin quoted from a Paul Durcan’s poem “Sniffing your approval, you shook hands with me. Well played, son.” The 16th hole was easy for Paddy Byrne as he hit his approach to 9 feet and he is now reading W. B. Yeats poetry to Donna and Isobel wholesale. Best score of the day was made by visitor Thomas Ormiston with a fabulous 40pts – highlighted by hitting the green in two on the 13th.  Protracted negiotations over a possible transfer from his parent society are delicately poised and would make the Van Gaal – Mourinho saga look trivial. The clean striking of Tony O’Reilly, excellent golfing etiquette and his quick wit bordering on slagging makes him a future star  of the society. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to full health were extended to our ever present Jimmy Carolan and we hope to see you in Killeen Castle on Sunday 3rd July fit and raring to go.

Before the presentation ended a barely believable fact emerged when young Vincent Barry was presented with a birthday cake to announce his arrival to the 40th club. Imagine Vincent is 40 – hard to believe – but in his speech he summarized his attitude with this quotation “An old fart is as good as a new one.” Last words to President Padraic “It’s a real honour to lead such a bunch of lads who love their golf and the society and sincere thanks for the privilege of  being your President. Enjoy the rest of the night!”

David Rooney’s emergence as a real threat to Jeffrey Martin’s dominance on the winner’s podium gained momentum on Saturday last.

To get your name in bright lights please forward match play results to spsheridan@eircom.net. Your time in the sun could be short lived so please forward results at your earliest convenience and get the most out of your victory.

Congratulations to Michael Kearney on conquering The Heritage on Saturday last. His excellent score of 34pts just held off the strong challenge of Captain Kieran with 33pts and young David Rooney bringing his Peruvian techiques into play in 3rd place.
