The Heritage Golf Club
Many members must have emulated Jordan Spieth in his meltdown if the scoring from The Heritage is any indication. Musically speaking phases like Wet Wet Wet, Wind in the Willows and The Sands flood to mind but alas The Eagles went unnoticed. However, one beacon shone through the chaos and that was Michael Kearney who shot a fine 34pts to win the overall. He pipped the fast finishing Kieran Rogers who shot a super back nine of 20pts and collected the category 2 dividend. Category 1 went to the unstoppable Jeffrey Martin who followed up his maiden Headfort win last weekend with another solid score. He ruffled a few big guns in this success. Category 3 was won by the ever steady Stephen McBreen woth 31pts while Michael Farrell continued his good form with success in category 4. The happiest man in the group was Sean McCabe who was the solitary twos winner following a chip in on the 7th. To bring the booty home he enlisted the services of his beloved Mary and his partners in crime Sean O’Sullivan and Paul Kelly. The matchplay draw threw up a number of interesting ties with David Rooney earmarked to surprise Sean O’Sullivan and a possible gigantic tussle between Declan O’Sullivan and Gavin Mackey. However, will Eamonn McDonnell surprise Jeffrey and can Richie outpoint our Captain. The tie of the round has to be between the wily Brían Clarke and defending champion Shane Brogan – already this match is a sell out.
Twinning Competition 2016
The European Club
A glorious morning greeted 24 golfers in their assault on Pat Ruddy’s gem. In honour of our visit Pat Ruddy warmly welcomed us and acted as our official starter. Since this outing was a twinning affair with Balbriggan many of the leaders fancied their chances of claiming the overall prize What followed among the leaders was utter carnage? One by one they either fell into bunkers or got tangled up in rough. It was surprising to see elite members of the society crumble and return back to the clubhouse forlorn and crestfallen. I was well looked after not to mention any names.
Meanwhile, the Jeffrey bandwagon continues to steam along the fairways of whatever courses we place in front of him. His stunning 34pts won the outing from another young man in a rich vein of form Philip Rogers with 32pts. Andy Coleman fell in love with the place and had 30pts playing of 3. It was left to Paddy Farrell to uphold the honour of the more experienced members by finishing 4th with 28pts. Jeff’s overall score of 55pts for both days brought him home a clear winner from Patrick Maguire and he knew clearly what time he got home at.
His repartee again hit the usual suspects but this time he confidently branched out to slag unfairly the quiet man of the society. There are many lying in the long grass for Jeffrey and 2016 could bring a few surprises for our new comic.
Ballyliffin Weekend Away 2nd / 3rd October 2015
All home safe and sound with ringing endorsements of the Ballyliffin experience. At 12 noon Friday the first ball scampered down the 1st fairway to tremendous applause from the excited but impatient golfers as each member waited for his turn to attack the beast of raw beauty that is Glashedy. Over five hours later many members returned back to the clubhouse somewhat chastened by the rough or the dreaded bunkers that caught out many. Despite tales of horrendous lies, steep bunker lips, pacy greens and the “lost ball” syndrome the mood was positive as members relaxed around the 19th. Sean O’Sullivan came in smiling after a cracking 35pts which just held off the challenge of Raphael McEvoy on 34pts. Gavin Mackey claimed 3rd with 33pts closely followed by Mark Argue and Vincent Barry with the same score. The Hamlet moment kindly sponsored by Wee Nev went to Sheamy after an uncharacteristic 5 out of a greenside bunker too close to the clubhouse. After a super dinner all members retired to bed and were tucked in by the wily old hands of Billy McLoughlin, Brian McFadden and Jim McArdle.
The 32 strong entourage of golfers made the mid morning journey back to the Old Links renewed with hope and buoyed up by rest and a healthy breakfast. This expanse of linksland with some of the most crumpled fairways in golf was breathtaking to the eye in superb October weather. The battle raged for many hours between the leaders and the course before the victors became known. Again with 35pts Sean O’Sullivan led home the pack closely followed by Gavin Mackey, Andy Coleman, James Cooney and captain elect Kieran Rogers. After seven shots out of fairway bunker Martin McArdle took home the Hamlet. The best golfer of the trip went easily to Sully and all members appreciated his gesture of dressing the mahogany after dinner. With Australia successful in the rugby the happy happy Shamrocks went for a stroll around the town to take in its history and rich heritage. At our Christmas party Thomas Liggan and Aiden Farrell will give a power point presentation on the history of Buncrana with particular emphasis on its music and bird life. Captain Vincent will follow up with a brief outline of the best daylight walks in the area. With God’s blessing, our thoughts now turn to Kerry in September 2016 and the hope is to see you all there and more. A thought from Buncrana on worry “Its like a rocking chair, it might keep you moving but it gets you nowhere.”
Mr. Vincent Cooney’s Captain’s Day 5/9/2015 Slieve Russell Golf Club
A truly brilliant day! They came in their droves to honour Captain Vincent and play the magnificent Slieve Russell creation. The early birds of Paul, Andy and James under the wing of fatherly figure Nixy got the ball rolling at 8.30am. At 10.00am the bread and butter members after indulging in coffee and biscuits headed to the first tee in quest of the Prize. What a beautiful Prize, a piece that would adorn and embellish any household and would earn the winner multi brownie points. The thought of winning it blew many off course immediately and the hot favourite Jeffrey capitulated early to blow the doors open for an unexpected but very deserving winner. Gerry Eagleton, our photographer on the 1st tee added to the atmosphere and probably caused a few of the younger lads to boil over. Imperious to any nerves Declan O’Sullivan rolled back the years to charge home to a convincing success. Playing outstanding golf he accepted the delicately designed and engraved trophy from Vincent to a standing ovation.
Balbriggan Outing 2/5/2015
What a shower! Non stop banter, no small amount of slagging, some reluctance to tackle the elements but 27 Braves faced the serious challenge presented by Balbriggan Golf Club on Saturday last. A few strong men crumbled after 9 holes while the remaining 21 battled against a constant downpour in harsh cold conditions. In the circumstances Aidan Farrell’s 30 pts was a good score and claimed his maiden victory as a Shamrock in his first season. More success is predicted for Aidan and he came home two points clear of a re-invented and rejuvenated Brían Clarke. A surprised Patrick Maguire crept into 3rd place on 26pts with the returning Liam McIntyre digging deep on the back nine to win the high handicap prize. A cracking shot to 5 feet on the 10th hole by Adrian Kelly plundered the two’s competition after he converted a slippery downhill putt with a severe left to right break. Kelly remained strong – one to watch. The matchplay draw created a great buzz with some outstanding matches lined up after the carnage of favourites in the first round. Interesting ties in the second round include Peter Reilly facing Sean O’Sullivan, Michael Kearney tackling defending champion Sean McEvoy and the wily Eric Davidson challenging the flamboyant well tanned Gavin Mackey.
